2014 Leadership Summit

The Center’s Leadership Innovation Grant from The Physicians Foundation

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.” -John Maxwell
In 2013 the Center for a Healthy Maryland received funding from The Physicians Foundation to create the Maryland Physician Leadership Institute. The grant funds were designated for assessing the current attitudes and practices among physicians with respect to leadership, assessing leadership development efforts within organized medicine, and to develop resources and training to begin to identify, cultivate and train future physician leaders. A Physician Advisory Board was established to guide staff in meeting grant goals and objectives. Two surveys were conducted; one targeting the general population of Maryland physicians and another targeting physician and organizational leaders. A management consultant analyzed and reported the findings of the surveys to the Physician Advisory Board. Discussion of the results from the two surveys informed the creation of the Physician Leadership Summits, entitled, “The Importance of Physician Leadership in Health Care Reform,” which were held in Montgomery County and Baltimore City on November 1st and 2nd of 2014. The Summits were four-hour sessions featuring a keynote address by renowned health care attorney and physician advocate, Alice G. Gosfield, Esq., a panel discussion by physician leaders and four skill-building breakout sessions. The presentation by Ms. Gosfield has been made available on the Center and MedChi websites for CME credit through 2015 (see links below). The Center’s website also features links to leadership resources for physicians. The Center is pleased that the Maryland Physician Leadership Institute has served as a springboard for the training of future Maryland physician leaders.
