Mission: Advocate for injury and violence prevention and promote education and surveillance in Maryland through statewide partnerships.
The Partnership for a Safer Maryland was formed in September of 2005 in response to the Center for Health Promotion receiving a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Core Injury Grant. This five year grant supports the State’s capacity to address injury and violence in Maryland and seeks to establish a self-sufficient injury program that will continue to address the safety needs of our residents long into the future. In October 2009, it was announced that this grant will be extended for one additional year, through July 2011.
The Partnership offers technical assistance to both members and non-members in regards to injury prevention. We recommend injury priority areas for the State, serve as a resource for program design, implementation, evaluation, and provide additional data, surveillance and training to members. Further, we have assisted in writing “Planning for the Future of Injury and Violence Prevention in Maryland” a strategic plan for statewide injury prevention.
The Partnership is comprised of individuals representing local, state and federal agencies, universities and research institutions, injury care providers, as well as private, professional and non-profit organizations. Our quarterly meetings serve as a forum for highlighting successful Maryland injury prevention programs as well as an opportunity for our partners to network with each other and share information and resources. Membership in the Partnership is open to all who are committed to the reduction and prevention of injury and violence in Maryland.
Finally, the promotion of injury and violence as a serious yet preventable public health concern is at the core of all we do. Identifying and promoting evidence based injury and violence prevention programs is a priority for the Partnership and our goal is to be able to provide funding to these recognized programs in Maryland in the near future.
As stated in our by-laws, a volunteer steering committee guides the Partnership with expertise in each of six injury priority areas (Poisons, Motor Vehicle/Pedestrian, Violence, Occupational, Home & Burn, and Recreational & Sports). With the steering committee focusing on the day-to-day operations of the organization, further guidance is provided by the Board of Advisors, which consists of some of Maryland’s (and the Country’s) premier authorities on injury and violence prevention.
